In addition to performance, budget, and aesthetics, policymakers and design professionals are now being asked to evaluate the environmental burdens of their design choices.

 Measuring the impacts of buildings, assemblies and products can be complex. Every design decision, from material and product selection to envelope design and construction can have an impact on the environment, and the methods used to evaluate those decisions are still not widely understood.

This webinar will address critical issues policymakers and design professionals should consider as they evaluate the environmental impacts of building materials to maximize resilience, performance and deliver lasting value.

Based in Seattle, Tien is the industry advocate for codes and green building protocols. He is a long-time sustainability leader promoting deep green practices and social responsibility to various industries from builders to manufacturers to NGOs.

He works to benchmark and decarbonize the industry by aligning governmental ambitions with corporate core values.

Over the past two decades, Tien has collaborated with external partners and internal stakeholders to ensure buildings and facilities are safe, healthy, and resilient. He served on the State Building Code Council and advised the Washington State Legislature on building code adoption.

He also facilitated the creation of the LEED Homes rating system as a committee member for the US Green Building Council as well as a reviewer for the International Code Council (ICC), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), ASHRAE, and ASTM standards.

Tien holds a M.Arch from the University of Houston and a B.E. in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
